Planet Labs: what it returns, and whether it works in Clay

Planet Labs is not available in Clay. It is best for Content demo, Diligence, Monitoring. Pricing: Sales call. Access: API and web platform; paid subscriptions sized by area and revisit (quota-based); education and research programs; free trial; pricing not published (unknown). Planet also serves Sentinel-2 open data. SkySat available through SkyFi (Planet Select, third-party). Licence restricts redistribution of imagery..

What does Planet Labs return?

Official fields: shared item properties acquired; published; geometry; publishing_stage (preview, standard, finalized); ground_lock. PSScene assets basic_analytic_4b; basic_analytic_8b; ortho_analytic_4b; ortho_analytic_8b; ortho_analytic_4b_sr; ortho_analytic_8b_sr; ortho_visual; ortho_udm2 (usable data mask). Scene quality properties documented on Planet's item property reference: clear_percent; cloud_percent; heavy_haze_percent; light_haze_percent; shadow_percent; snow_ice_percent; visible_confidence_percent. PlanetScope: 3 m resolution, 4 or 8 bands (coastal blue, blue, green I, green, yellow, red, red edge, NIR), near-daily coverage of land. SkySat: 50 cm class, tasking and video. Note: the full PSScene property table on docs.planet.com loads client-side and could not be read here.

What can you derive from it?

1. Near-daily site change: PlanetScope revisit catches construction progress, lot fill and stockpile changes within days. 2. Agricultural and mining activity: NDVI and footprint change for commodity-exposed targets. 3. Inventory proxies: log yards, car lots, container stacks observed over time (requires SkySat or analytics to count). 4. Disaster exposure: flood or fire extent against a portfolio company's locations. 5. Expansion detection: new buildings or pads at a facility.

How would a GTM team use it?

1. Diligence: subscribe to an AOI over each target facility and review a 12-month image stack before close. 2. PE screen: compute change metrics over sites of candidate companies in asset-heavy sectors. 3. Revenue trigger: for equipment, security or staffing clients, prospect companies whose sites show active construction. 4. Competitive watch: monthly SkySat tasking over a competitor's main plant. 5. Market map: inventory every facility of a type in a region using Planet basemaps plus public records.

What are the caveats?

Not a native Clay integration as of 2026-10-17 (checked against Clay's integrations catalog). Can be called through Clay's HTTP API column where an API exists. 3 m PlanetScope shows change, not vehicles; object counts need 50 cm SkySat or analytics. Cloud masks are imperfect and clear_percent is per scene, not per AOI unless recomputed. Satellite imagery proves presence or change, never revenue or cause. Not every daily capture is published; only scenes meeting quality thresholds. Google Maps in Clay is not a substitute.
