What does OSHA enforcement data (DOL enforcement data API) return?

Documented fields (inspection table, from a public mirror of the DOL data; official dictionary not readable without JavaScript): activity_nr; reporting_id; estab_name; site_address; site_city; site_state; site_zip; owner_type; adv_notice; safety_hlth; sic_code; naics_code; insp_type; insp_scope; union_status; nr_in_estab; open_date; case_mod_date; close_conf_date; close_case_date. Violation and accident tables link by activity_nr and carry standard cited, violation type, penalty amounts and incident details.

What can you derive from it?

1. Recent serious or wilful citation: a dated safety event that triggers demand for training, safety consulting and equipment. 2. Fatality or serious injury inspection (accident tables): high-urgency signal and a diligence red flag. 3. Repeat inspections at one employer: a weak safety culture marker. 4. Industry inspection density by county: a market-sizing input for safety services. 5. Union status and headcount at site (nr_in_estab): workforce context for HR and labour diligence.

How would a GTM team use it?

1. Diligence: pull every inspection, violation and penalty for a target and its sites over ten years before LOI. 2. Lead lists: list construction and manufacturing employers cited for fall protection or lockout in the last 90 days for a safety training portco. 3. PE screen: compare a roll-up's portcos with industry peers on citations per 100 inspections. 4. Revenue trigger: alert when a competitor of a portco's customer base receives a large penalty. 5. Content demo: show a named roofing roll-up's citation history compared with its peers.

What are the caveats?

Not a native Clay integration as of 2026-10-17 (checked against Clay's integrations catalog). Can be called through Clay's HTTP API column where an API exists. Employer names are free text with inconsistent spellings, so matching to companies needs fuzzy logic. Inspections cover a small share of workplaces, so absence of records is not proof of safety. State-plan states run their own programmes and data quality varies. Penalties change after informal settlement; use current penalty fields. The legacy enforcedata.dol.gov now redirects to data.dol.gov, and the DOL OSHA datasets were re-published in June 2026.
