What can you derive from it?
1. Headcount proxy: TOT_ACTIVE_PARTCP_CNT per sponsor and its year-over-year change. 2. Vendor relationships: insurance carriers, brokers and commissions (Schedule A) and service providers (Schedule C), which reveal switches and renewal timing. 3. Plan assets and employer contributions (Schedule H) as a scale and profitability proxy. 4. Corporate events: LAST_RPT_SPONS_NAME and EIN changes indicate mergers or renames. 5. Funding structure: self-funded versus insured welfare plans.
How would a GTM team use it?
1. TAM build: employers with 100 to 2,000 active participants in a NAICS and state, with sponsor phone. 2. Revenue trigger: plans whose carrier or broker changed in the latest filing, or new plans, for benefits, payroll and HR-tech clients. 3. PE screen: participant growth as a headcount trend for private targets. 4. Buyer map: employers by welfare benefit mix (health, dental, vision, stop-loss). 5. Diligence: verify a target's headcount and benefit costs.
What are the caveats?
Not a native Clay integration as of 2026-10-17 (checked against Clay's integrations catalog). Can be called through Clay's HTTP API column where an API exists. Plans with fewer than 100 participants mostly file 5500-SF with fewer schedules, so small employers are thin. Filings lag the plan year by 7 months or more. Participants include some former employees and exclude workers not in the plan, so counts approximate headcount. Sponsor names and EINs need matching to company records. No Clay provider sells 5500 data.
